Few would argue that the primary goal of education is the pursuit of knowledge. However, the measure of this goal is a student’s grade on assignments and exams. During the course of a semester, a student is frequently required to recall concepts from readings and class lectures. Sometimes these concepts must be recalled by author and other times by week. Frequently concepts must be referenced across multiple authors or even multiple courses. To complicate this, research has taught us that the human mind is better at recognition than recall and generally we are not good at recalling information after some time has passed.

To solve this recollection problem for students, I want to propose a way to support the specific information gathering activity of class concepts. To do this, I am proposing a Web-based database where students can collaboratively maintain a list of concepts coded by class, author, page, and syllabus week. In education we like to encourage instructors to act as “guides on the side, not sages on the stage.” There are times however when we need the information handed to us quickly and I would propose the name for this application to be Saygz.
